We warmly welcome Erik Elgersma to our Associate Network. Erik is an expert in the use of competitive intelligence as input to corporate strategy design. He has over 25 years experience in strategy, business development and innovation consultancy. He practiced this both within two large companies (Akzo Nobel, FrieslandCampina) and as an independent consultant. A researcher by training, Erik holds a Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. He has in addition completed Executive Education in leading business school (Harvard, IMD, INSEAD, London School of Economics). Erik is now also a visiting lecturer at the school of business and economics of the VU University Amsterdam and Vlerick Business School, Belgium. He authored three books in the field of competitive intelligence.
Erik’s core belief is that companies have to ‘compete on knowledge’. Outperforming in knowing the own markets and strengths, and the weaknesses of the competition is a proven driver to success. Algorithm-augmented, fact-based decision-making is the future. This requires companies to organize their data and intelligence collection, processing and reporting with rigor, aiming for the outputs thereof to be timely, accurate, complete and cost-efficient. Even when obsessed with detailed data, Erik takes a global view. He has consulted to businesses on all continents except Antarctica and has worked and lived for almost five years in South East Asia to get a better understanding of what cultural differences mean to business strategy and tactics.
